i saw an interview with Anna Quindlen many years ago, she talked of how her friends marvelled at her children reading , she simply said , " look at your house, it has to be full of books and they have to see you be an avid reader" i had never really been conscious of it before but the very next time i tidied up the living room i realized, even with small children, a huge part of our mess was books.that hasn't changed over the years, every morning as i straighten the living room after everyone has gone for the day, the majority of the task is piling up the books and magazines and gathering up the cups from the drinks we enjoyed while lost in them.

life for a Mom teens these days involves watching a LOT of Youtube. i am constantly being called to the computer " Mom come look at this" many times it is ridiculous stuff ( two min of your life you will never get back!) , but there are also amazing sights from around the world, talented people, movie trailers, music
videos . with Christian ,who is away at college, it was usually music. he still sends me links on Facebook ,
"check this out" the last couple of times they made me cry, i guess i am really missing him these days.
this morning this was on his Facebook ,an artist we both love , someone i actually discover, the brother of one of my Flickr friends, hope enjoy.

the snow is melting , i heard some birds singing yesterday and the brides are calling!
my finally exciting undertaking for 2011 is
juliannacollettphotography weddings
when i first began to immerse myself in digital photography , i quickly dismissed weddings
as something i would not do. memories of my own weddings and those i had known ,with LONG torture sessions with huge groups of wedding party and relatives ( images that would never see the light of day , much less be displayed) came to mind. as i began " blog stalking " , and learning i discover a that there was a very different trend in wedding photography out there, one that fit my style . there is a trend toward a more editorial/ lifestyle approach to weddings. the bride and groom as the main focus and models , the wedding party and the details ( so lovingly planned ) as the stage and compliment to their day. capturing the complete spirit of the day. i still remember the day when i first came across jessica kettle's blog. at 40 something , I thought this is how i want to shoot when i grow up! i loved her edit style and the ecscetic- the perfect balance between romantic and contemporary , vintage but edgy.
as i matured as a photographer i realized that i am a detail shooter , I approach each type of shoot
through the details and wedding are a detail feast
i will just be dipping my toes in these waters this summer as i have to balance this and our building project ( blogged previously) but i can't tell you how excited i am for what this summer holds!

i talked previously about my love of design and that also plays a huge roll in my second big project of 2011.we are building a house in the country! this is a project that has been in the works for a while now . it started even before i got back into photography. my husband and i have built a house before and we love the construction /design process and wanted to do it again. the first time around we went fairly builder basic and safe, this time we are stretching our design wings to get the house we always wanted. if we could , we would love to buy a big old house a remodel but since nothing fits that bill, in our area, we are going to build a 'new/ old house " , i made the floor plan myself and then worked with an architect to get it just right , it is my version of modern farmhouse.
- Craftsman style
- clapboard walls on some interior spaces
- polished cement floors
- mod wallpaper
- no upper cabinets in the kitchen
- painted wood floors on the second floor
- radiators
- dormer ceilings
- window seats
and above all tons of light and space, it is all in the details, and that is the part i love. i am spending hour online gather all the fixtures so we are ready to go in the spring . i have had a binder full of magazine clippings for years , these are some of my inspirations.

when i was doing my 365 project, a lot of people asked me ... do i look at the world that way ?
do i" see" in pictures ... well the answer is yes! i have probably always seen that way but my
project really sharpened that skill. with a sideways glance , everywhere i look i see images i wish i had captured. sometimes i grab my camera , other times i am "to busy" and others the moments are gone as soon as i recognize them. several times a day it appears , the corner of a room, the way the light is suddenly laying on an object , something , or someone i see around town. more often than not they remain as images uncaptured , after all i have a normal life with things to do.
when i saw this video on a friends blog , i was fascinated. how great it would be to wander around a city anonymously taking pictures

last november when I had the vague idea that i wanted to do a "365 project" in 2010 i came across a blog of a lady who was just finishing hers.
she was reflecting on her year a gave some recommendations that solidified my resolve and helped me tremendously. i thought i would add my two cents to them and send them back out into cyber space for anyone else who is considering the same, along with some of my favorite images from the year.
2. Shoot in the morning – I learned this quickly when the days are so much shorter in winter. This is also key for those days when you are really busy, or you simply can’t bring your camera along – then your photo for the day is taken care of.
3. Photograph your food – You eat every day, why not capture your meal? plate things up a take a quick shot before you sit down to the table.
4. Find others who are doing the same - There are a number of groups on flickr dedicated to a 365 project. And I can guarantee that there will be a number of photography blogs doing the same. This will help you become accountable to someone other than yourself.
5. Don’t set yourself up to fail. This should have been #1. Honestly, if you feel that this is going to be too much for you, or this upcoming year is going to be a year of change for you (moving, having a baby, etc), why not consider a photo a week project? It’s ok – there is no right or wrong, this is YOUR photography project.
6. Get a system in place for uploading your photos. You can use your flickr account, smugmug, you’ll want a space to show your hard work off! This is a MUST . If you have no place for others to view your work it will soon seem pointless. You will also be surprised and encouraged by the times that you thought you did a ”garbage shot to get it over for the day” and others love it!
7. Be a ruthless with deleting . You will take far more than one shot on each day , edit and upload your top pick. Save a web copy and a print quality copy in separate files. ( I grouped 2 month together in a file) and DELETE the rest ,your computer will cluttered and you will feel overwhelmed if you don’t have a system for containing and organizing your project..
8. Keep going through the rough times.This is a photography marathon . Everyshot will NOT be masterpiece , in fact you will hate LOTS of them. Honestly, this project is UNFORGIVING. Let me be the first to tell you that in the course of a year: you WILL get sick, your kids will get sick, you’ll have good days, you’ll have bad days, etc. Realize that life will happen and be prepared for it.
9. Let your friends and family know. Yes, they will figure it out when your camera will seem attached to your body, but if they know that this is important to you, believe me, after a while they will be your cheerleaders, encourage you, and sometimes remind you to take a photo!
